Synopsis

Xorcist are nothing if not inconsistent. Well, that's not entirely true--their notoriously low-budget cover art has been pretty consistent over their six CD releases. But musically, what began as a somewhat jokey, somewhat schlocky, very heavy industrial band has evolved on Nomad into a mature, sonically savvy project that aims to take the listener to the same lush, atmospheric plane on which we find bands like Delerium and Enigma. Samples of Gregorian chant mingle with long, placid synth stretches and languid beats, most effectively on "Alienautic" and the tabla-flavored "Spiritual Angles." Elements of the Xorcist of old do pop up (check out the noisy, jarring "Whiplash Sonogram"), but the band seems to have exorcized most of its industrial demons in favor of a new--and very welcome--direction. --Steve Landau

CD Reviews

Dark, ambient electronic music
Staring Girl | Thornton, CO | 08/28/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"It's very hard for me to place this album into any sort of genre or compare it to any other kind of music. I guess you could say it sounds a bit like older Delerium in parts then in other parts, particularly the songs with vocals, it's a lot harder and intense. There are a lot of electronics and it has a sort of melancholy, gothic sound for the most part. Each song sort of meshes into the next, so this is the type of album you would just want to sit back, relax and listen to the whole thing from beginning to end. Many of the song start off small and soft then keep building and building with a basic repetitive beat.

If you like dark gothic-type electronic music then you probably enjoy this album.
