What I will thankfully forget about the process of recording this record is that conditions weren t ideal; I didn t have resources to be an artist the way I picture them, focused and hidden away, tirelessly crafting while being shielded from pedestrian wage earning and isolated from life s chaos. In fact, I had a disastrous tour in India earlier this year followed by a domestic tour ending abruptly in a catastrophic tour bus accident. However, it seems that I have exactly what I need. Whether it be through the support of great new friends on the India tour and an angel in Mumbai International Airport (paying out of pocket to get me home when I had lost everything), or the loving support of my family and friends who generously and creatively helped fund the expensive process of professional recording - I have always had what I needed. With Trip-R I embraced (I hope) both the technology to sound fabulous and the commitment to portray all of the love, grief, rage, sensuality and hope I ve experienced recently. This album is about the all of life - the exceptional and the ordinary. I found the process equally challenging and cathartic. I thank my father for introducing me to timeless music. As a small boy I remember sitting on the shag carpet in our first house just north of Detroit, listening to his music pulse from the large oak and tweed stereo, forever impacted by both Bach s epic organ concertos and the deeply visual arrangements of The Pat Metheny Group. Then, in school, I received my first rock album, Queen s Flash Gordon Soundtrack. Those core influences continue to shape everything about my craft and today, all it takes is one note of that music and I instantly recall every stunning detail about that time. I hope my music finds a place in your life. Relevance is the quality I have always enjoyed about great music - the ability to generate an experience that crosses cultures, political and religious perspectives, and always allows whatever interpretation is needed by the listener. So, this record is for you now. Yours to interpret. Yours to redefine. Yours to use. The studio is my church, its music my sanctuary. I hope it gives you exactly what you need.
