CD Reviews

Good, albeit a little disappointing
Weston C. Childers | San Angelo, Texas United States | 12/26/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Chicago's own WNUA 95.5 has put out a mixed-bag here. This semi- eclectic album, featuring many of today's Smooth Jazz-giants, no doubt captivates the listener, and allows him/her to seemingly escape into a world of smooth, sensual, and relaxing music. One would venture to guess why this album didn't come with a disclaimer about possibly spicing up the consumer's love life, as it is practically chock-full of amorous ballads and melodies, making it an essential for any romantic occasion. However, like most everything else that is good in the world, this too is not without its blemish, and it certainly shows at times. While each one of these tracks could certainly stand out in their own right, they do not gel very well when put into succession, thus making the album comes across as seemingly monotonous and somewhat repetitive. I would be remiss if I did not make mention of the fact that the album feels a little "short" with just 12 tracks( the "thirteenth track" or the enhanced portion of the CD merely acts as glorified sales-pitch and could have been omitted in favor of another musical track). One would think a reputable radio station such as WNUA 95.5 would have had a slightly better mix from which to compile this album. Despite the caveats here, it is obivious WNUA's heart is in the right place, and it shows. Here's hoping WNUA's next outings rely more on variety and less on monotony. In closing, this album can best be likened to an old pair of slippers; a little worn, a little ragged, but nevertheless inviting, warm, and always waiting for you to slip on comfortably when you come in the door."
