Synopsis

Album Description
The nearly eight minute long opener Threnody displays Winterfell from all its sides: near-thrash guitar thunderstorms in conjunction with melodic semi-ballad moments, carried by the voice of a singer who still deserves that name. Inspired by the likes of Rush and Iron Maiden, Winterfell manage to combine the progressive mindset of the former with the virtuoso playing of the latter, although by adding a contemporary heaviness, the come close to the power metal style of Nevermore, early Fates Warning and Queensrÿche. Most of the time the band stays in a welcome melodic power metal genre, although much heavier than most of its European counterparts, only the band's shortest song The Iris (and still more than four minutes long) is a true thrash prog song. The moderately high vocals remind of the heyday of Iced Earth, meaning you get a true virile metal voice. The bass sounds more melodic than with many other bands, and the guitars, when they are not fighting each other with killer chords, do some nice complicated signature changes. The drums take well care to pound the whole thing on. The Veil Of Summer offers a short hour of some of the best metal I have heard this year, and proving that you don't always need a label to make a killer album.

CD Reviews

Nearly Perfect
Avalonjohn44 | Northern Virginia | 10/07/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album has everything from Thrash, to Fantasy Metal, to Priest and Maiden inspired riffs and hooks, to technical and speedy guitar work - and usually all in one song. Think Barlow Era Iced Earth, but with more consistently good music (IE has some great albums, but also a lot of filler).

Also, Fans of the great fantasy novels by George R R Martin will enjoy this, the band bases songs (as well as their name...) on his A Song of Ice and Fire series.

Back to the music, inspiring stuff. These guys put this album together on their own. No Label, yet megastar production quality, and great artwork inside and out, nothing cheaply done on this album.

This is the sleeper disk of the year.

The disk is over an hour long, but it will feel like only 10 minutes went by, every song on here is very good, they do not run together, each is unique.

This is their first full length album, but if you can find thier EP Winter is Coming, you should pick that up as well. More Fantasy based songs from Martin to Tolkein...

As I said in the title, this album is nearly perfect."
Great CD, too bad they don't have a label

"I got into metal only recently, with my first few Iron Maiden CD's that I really enjoy. I've read the Fire and Ice series by George R R Martin that gives this band its name, and so I decided to pick up the CD after checking out the samples at their website(winterfell.org). I immediatley got into the CD, with their fantasty and medieval themes to go along with some awesome guitar work and a range of different vocal types by the singer Robb. I enjoy them more than Iron Maiden personally, just the style I like better. Its heavy at times and thoughtfully melodic at others, with themes I enjoy. The songwriting is very well done and poetic too, such as the line "Embrace your life its wonderous, and love your loves so thunderous". I encourage anyone reading this to check out the website and download some of sample songs to see how you like them. Hopefully you will buy the CD and support the band, who is currently without a label."
