"I just discovered this artist, and what a nice cd!! a great cover of 'Grazing In the Grass', great rhythms on this late 60's lp..and Willie does a nice job vocally on 'The Look Of love' & 'This Guy's In Love With You'."
Mr. Latin Boogaloo
Enrique Torres | San Diegotitlan, Califas | 11/01/2007

"Many people born after 1970 may have never heard of Willie Bobo but if by chance you are just coming across him you are in for a real treat. He is the father of Eric Bobo the percussionist of Cypress Hill (also played with the Beastie Boys). He recorded many LP's during the 60's and this disc was a departure of sorts from some of his other recordings. The Latin jazz elements are all still here but Willie Bobo now takes center stage by adding vocals to some tracks. His vocal style is reminiscent of other Latin crooners of the time period; mysterious and sensous musings with an ever so slight accent. Check out his version of the often recorded "The Look of Love." It is made for the late night dance floor when a new acquaintance becomes more than that and will soon become a good friend. "Yellow Days" is another such song that has soft rhythms, complete with string arrangements that spells romance. He even tries his singing hand at another pop tune from the 60's entitled "This Guy's in Love With You." This is the least strongest of his vocals attempts but nonetheless a vast improvement over the original. This disc is an interesting mix. One minute Willie Bobo is crooning a bolero and the next song is a hot Latin jazz number; it is like there is no happy medium, it is either a ballad or smok'n. There are several of the smok'n variety, like the the Eddie Harris jazz classic, "Sham Time" from the album The Electrifying Eddie Harris/Plug Me In , "Psychedelic Blues" that is a great Latin jazz jam tune and another 60's standard (5th Dimension?)"Grazing in the Grass" that has a jazz makeover in the vein of Hugh Masekela's Grazing in the Grass: The Best of Hugh Masekela. In spite o all these good songs the creme dela creme of his slow jams might just be the one song he sings in Spanish entitled "Quieres Volver." He croons in true bolero(ballad)fashion: es muy caliente(it is very hot) and yet oh, so cool. All of the songs are good but there are just not enough of them. In this day of every disc being one hour plus it is rare to find one like this under 40 minutes. Maybe they should have packaged this with another disc like the fine Spanish Grease/Uno Dos Tres 1-2-3 that features two releases combined as one. In any event you can't go wrong with this disc that is part Latin jazz, part romantic fare and all Willie Bobo boogaloo. This is classic stuff."
