Violinist Willie Royal and guitarist Wolfgang "Lobo" Fink, who perform as Willie & Lobo, are the kind of musicians that people describe as being good on record but great in concert. And judging by the powerful performances on Live in Concert they may be right. When you hear selections like "Fandango Nights" or "Flamenco Mexicana" stripped of the extraneous instrumentation and studio effects, you gain a new respect for Fink's supple rhythmic sense and Royal's intense but sweet fiddling. An added treat is Royal's between-song patter, where he talks of the difficulty he had learning to clap the complex flamenco rhythms and tells the tale of how Fink acquired his lupine nickname. As good as their studio albums are, Live in Concert offers a convincing argument that Willie & Lobo's true home is the stage. --Michael Simmons

CD Reviews

Absolute beauty!

"I've listened to Willie and Lobo for a number of years now, and have (luckily) been afforded the opportunity to see them live before. I remember how much more attached I became to this duo when I found out (in a long lost article from Pacific Longboarder Magazine) that, like myself, both are devoted surfers and lovers of the ocean. This is particurlarly true for Wolfgang (i.e., "Lobo").I mention that because, when hearing this music, and knowing just a little bit about these two, you can FEEL their music that much more...you realize that it's part of a bigger "picture" and that the emotions are pure and true.Although each of their preceding studio albums are completely beautiful, this live cd offers an insight into their music that cannot be garnered from their studio releases. In concert, the musicianship of these two comes across loud and clear. It cannot be missed. It is a passion, and a zest for life that comes forth from every single note played. Just try listening to "Dance with you" (on this release) and not feeling the emotion behind, and in, it.In addition, the sound quality of this live recording is immaculate. As one who approaches live cd's with a bit of caution and reserve, this almost sounds as if were recorded in a studio. It is only between songs, and with the wonderful dialogue of W&L to the audience, that you realize that, yes, there is an audience there.Do not let the reviews of this live cd deter you from getting their other cd's. Each one is absolutely moving and beautiful. The music, on each release, is so pure and heart-felt. I would suggest starting with either the cd's "Siete," "Wild Heart," or "Fandango Nights." Those, especially the latter, are wonderful introductions to W&L. The first two on the list are their more recent cd's, and reflect a (slightly) more polished and developed sound.Get this, and enjoy it. If you can, drive to a remote spot overlooking something you find particularly beautiful or scenic. Or, stay in, turn off all the lights and light some candles...open your windows a bit....and let this emotional, wonderfully uplifting album....and, not to sound corny but, spirtually moving album.....into your life."
Best album of all-Live in Concert

"I have loved Willie and Lobo for more years than many have even know of their existence. I was extremely fortunate to have heard them live in a little bar in Puerto Vallarta in 1991. Being a musician myself, I can truly appreciate this kind of talent. I went back every chance I had while in Puerto Vallarta as they truly mesmerized me. The "Live in Concert" album is the closest to the sound, feeling, and music I heard from them in 1991. Back then, they sold cassettes (not studio versions) at the bar which of course I bought. I wish I had more of them since that one was worn out long, long ago. While all of their albums are excellent, they don't truly capture and exploit (for lack of a better word) what unique, gifted, accomplished musicians they are. The studio recordings with added instrumentals as on the other albums left me wanting more of the Willie and Lobo so long ago.

For a true experience of these remarkable musicians I highly recommend "Live in Concert" and if ever given the chance to see them live. Don't miss it! You will walk away in absolute awe!I would give anything to see them come to Flagstaff again.

Amazing Musicians, even better Landlord

"Wille was the first landlord I've ever had and the most down to earth to date. I was a fan of Wille and Lobo beofore I realized who I was renting from. He shared fruit from his trees and occasionally came by to trade surfing stories. He even visited me at work and introduced me to Lobo and his son. Amazing individaul and AMAZING musician."
