Product Description

Voices of the Loon was written and produced by William E Barklow. This recording contains loon voicings recorded in their natural habitat. Narration of the various loon calls is provided by Robert J Lurtsema. William Barklow received his Ph.D. from Tufts University. His thesis dealt with loon vocal communication. He is currently teaching at Framingham State College in Massachusetts and continuing his research on animal communications. The late Robert J. Lurtsema was the host of "Morning Pro Musica" at WGBH Public Broadcasting in Boston, Massachusetts.

"As someone who spends summers in British Columbia and who has fallen in love with the loons on the lake there, this is a precious cd. There is no addition of music, thankfully, so loons are foregrounded; this is pure loon call. The most helpful part of this cd is the narration, which instructs the listener in what various calls mean. Now when we know when they are feeling threatened, when they're mating, and the nuances of their communication. And it is hauntingly lovely to hear their calls again; this recording will tide us over through the winter until we can return to the north and its loons."
