Synopsis

Album Description
Wilderness is an unconventional band from Baltimore, whose apparent musical pedigree stems from the likes of The Fall, This Heat, Savage Republic, Public Image Limited, and Joy Division - without sounding like any of them - and whose music is every bit as spiritual as it is visceral, as nuanced as it is overt, and as communal and all-embracing as it is culturally alienating and nihilistic. "Vessel States" is sure to fortify the critical acclaim (Pitchfork's Best New Music tag and one of Magnet's noteworthy albums of the year).

CD Reviews

Luna meets the Edge...and good 'ol REM
P. J. Burke | Oak Creek, WI | 04/16/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"...but they're so good comparisons to anyone else short-changes them. Great guitar riffs and bass enough to satisfy the craven...from the 'can't get enough' of emergency and its great opening guitar that just grabs you and won't let go to gravity bent lights kicking close...to monumentals hypnotic guitar line...enigmatic lyrics that add the right texture to every song...had REM continued along the path set by Murmur and Reckoning and met U2's edge in a musical dream they would have made this...thank god Wilderness did it instead ! Thanks to Waterloo Records in Austin for playing this...woke me up from a 6th street hazy walk--shook me right up...had to get it."
Dark and brooding!

"I didn't expect what I received from this album due to all the hoopla about the PIL/Joy Division comparisons. I like those bands okay and gave this a shot. It certainly has some elements from those bands, but I was blown away by its taut single mindedness and dark atmosphere. The vocalist gives it his all in a weird and chilling delivery. They sound like they're from the future. It's a all crispy guitar arpeggio's and a fairly dry drum mix. Wilderness' 'Vessel States' has a very insular sound and is a little unsettling. It's also my favorite record of this year so far. I'm sure most will find the vocals an aquired taste, but you have to respect a band going this far to create its own world. I hear their first self titled is just as good if not better."
Wired for discourse

"The adventure continues. What do kick flip inneundo and distorted polar sized portions of grind get you- more and more into the wilderness. Baltimore favs do awesome on ther 2nd release. More exploratory than oratory. More sonic stamping than stammer. I love this freaking band, you should too. Mild rock? Not."
