CD Reviews

THE best single I own
wellwellwell | bog | 03/27/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In a world that normally offers just one or maybe two bonus tracks on the everyday single, it's a great relief to find such a long list of 'hits' on this one. 'Weird Al' Yankovic's infamous "Gump" leads the way as the title track, yet it's the b-sides and bonuses that make this single a certain 5 stars. This single has seven songs (that's right, seven!): [ 1. Gump | 2. Spy Hard | 3. Since You've Been Gone | 4. Since You've Been Gone (karaoke) | 5. Callin' In Sick (instrumental) | 6. Spy Hard (instrumental) | 7. Spy Hard (orchestral) ]. And even though you may think the instrumentals, etc are/would be boring, they actually do entertain. The real treasure on this CD is "Spy Hard". It was the theme song to the Leslie Nielsen film of the same name. In which Al appeared at the very beginning (singing the song). It's an exalting parody of the Bond-film themes and does a great job capturing the hilariousness the movie was going for (which is identical to the Naked Gun movies). This is your only chance to find the song; so don't miss out. Another featured track is "Since You've Been Gone", which I think is better than "Gump" and many of the songs on Bad Hair Day. It's basically a shorter, latter-day version of "You Don't Love Me Anymore". But the karaoke'd version of it is particularly enjoyable; not only to sing along to, but to hear the background vocals alone. They're almost as entertaining as the original's are. Also, the instrumental versions of both "Callin' In Sick" and "Spy Hard" are similar to a karaoke mix. You can just as easily sing along with them. Finally, the orchestral mix of "Spy Hard" is a perfect epic for a single; as its sound is very virtuoso. The only thing wrong with this CD is the cover that's pictured here on Amazon. I have no idea what that 'Flash Bxstard' thing is about, but it's not what is on my cover. My CD has a picture of Al sitting on a bench with actor Andy Comeau (8 Heads In A Duffel Bag). Andy does a perfect job portraying the character of Forest Gump. And the CD title is typed similar to The Presidents Of The United States Of America's album was; in a continuous nospacesfashion. They should change the picture, so to stop puzzling customers.Anyways, this is hand's down the best single I own. As it'll not only entice you to buy Al's full-length CD (if you haven't already), but will offer up some incredible b-sides as well. And even if you do own Bad Hair Day, "Spy Hard" and the remixes of these tracks still make it worth your time and money. "Spy Hard" makes this an obvious essential for 'Weird Al' Yankovic addicts. And "Gump", the remixes, and "Since You've Been Gone" all add to its rare, endless greatness. Do buy this, and I guarantee you will enjoy it."
It's the theme from Spy Hard

"This CD single contains seven tracks, which are:1. Gump
2. Spy Hard
3. Since You've Been Gone
4. Since You've Been Gone (Karaoke Version)
5. Callin' in Sick (Instrumental)
6. Spy Hard (Instrumental)
7. Spy Hard (Orchestral Mix)These are all good songs, but the instrumental versions are only moderately interesting. The CD is worth getting, though, for "Spy Hard". This song is unavailable elsewhere, as far as I know."
Great Single! by Scott Basler

"I first listened to "Gump" in summer of '96 when I bought this single. It has "Gump", a really funny track. "Spy Hard", another cool track, also has the original version and two instrumental mixes. Probably the only way to get that track without buying the soundtrack! "Since You've Been Gone" includes karaoke and original versions. I think it's even better than "Gump"! "Callin' In Sick" includes the instrumental version. Great single, Al!"
