CD Reviews

Sentimental, for sure
J. Borja | Santa Monica | 05/18/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Working on a Warren Zevon session was not as crazy as one might think. I was doing overdubs on a project that would later become Warren Zevon's Sentimental Hygiene. Niko Bolas was the main engineer on the session and I was a big fan of his work. I did simple overdubs on the sessions and yet those days were magic for me. Reconsider Me, was the one song that has stayed with me and perhaps always as a profound musical piece of the soul. This record will be the only time (as brief as it was) I've gotten close enough to Warren to shake his hand and smile to the music he created that day in the studio. I am a Warren Zevon fan and will always be."
Warren Zevon Gets Sober For The Second Time, And Comes Back
The Footpath Cowboy | Kingston, NY United States | 01/19/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Around 1980, Warren Zevon had gotten clean and sober following a bout with alcoholism, resulting in three great albums- BAD LUCK STREAK IN DANCING SCHOOL, the live STAND IN THE FIRE, and THE ENVOY, after which, following the use of wine for a ritual purpose (he was Jewish), he fell off the wagon again and was not heard from for five years. By 1987, he'd regained his sobriety, and came back swinging with SENTIMENTAL HYGIENE, arguably his best since STAND IN THE FIRE. Although he still has a wicked sense of humor ("Detox Mansion" satirizes the experience of being in rehab, whereas "Even A Dog Can Shake Hands" serves as a sarcastic warning for me that staying away from toxic people will help me look good for several pretty actresses), it's tempered by thoughtful examinations of what he learned while getting sober, which make this CD, with its remastered sound, cut deeper emotionally than some of his early work. This album is essential listening for anyone struggling with ANY type of addiction; in fact, even a horse-lover who compulsively gambles every last penny at the races can learn from this CD."
Sentimental for Zevon

"This is another great Zevon album. I had the LP and just bought the remastered version on CD. Maybe it's just me but the title track Sentimental Hygiene, well I just can't get it out of my head since the first time I heard it years ago. Check it out dog..5 stars! It's worth the price of the CD just to crank it up and rock out to it.
