CD Reviews

More hip hop club banger - better than tegos CD
Sonny Santana | Aztlan, Anahuac | 12/04/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Voltio's new CD has been under the radar despite selling more units than Wisin y Yandel at your local Target. W&Y fans are overdosing on their new joint and seem to be hating on this CD because the style is so different, its like day and night. And no, Voltio is not biting Calle 13's style, although the similarities are apparent, but they both have developed their sense of humor at the same time. Voltio comes hard and thick with straight hip hop tracks like the banging opener "Perco C" and the booming reggaeton/vallenato track "El Mellao." "Yo Se Que Tiemblas" has an old school Latin hip hop sound, while "Me Pones Mal" has the newer, deep groove reggaeton sound that is of the moment. To be honest, "Ponmela," the most promoted radio track is the weakest song on the whole CD. I guess its supposed to tap into the underage Casa de Leones crowd. The rock track "Feka" is also a misstep, but after that, the rest of the CD burns with a couple of down tempo rumbas, a decent salsa track ("Pelea"), a few tolerable love songs, and builds up to "Christina," which should be another hit. "En lo claro" is Voltio's tirarea track where he puts police violence and other weak reggaetoneros (W&Y?) on blast. In short, this CD presents a deep sound that is intended for mature Latin music fans that don't need cheesy syths and like their music to bump hard con un chingo de bass.
