CD Reviews

War uncensored
Katherine Lafayette | North Carolina | 09/03/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I am the first to admit that I am not a rap fan. Yet the concept of this CD appealed to me and I purchased it. Thinking it might be educational to share this with my daughter, I bought the censored version--mistake! The uncensored version is now the obvious choice. Much is lost in the empty pauses and missing expletives. This is after all about raw emotion.

I appreciate the CD more for its documentary value than its musical value, though the latter is actually good. It transported me to the war zone and connected me intimately to the thoughts and emotions of its soldiers. It is painful to hear the tormented emotions of these young people; yet logically, what else could they possibly be experiencing in such circumstances? This is the truth about war. They are feeling and experiencing what so many previous generations of soldiers have struggled through. Their advantage is that they can record and express those emotions, both in their regular gatherings and on this CD, and that someone will listen to them back home. It would be great if everyone could hear this CD (all right, some audiences would have to listen to the censored version). Too many of us are totally detached from the war (and the world, for that matter) and could really benefit from the insights this CD affords. It might actually contribute to a credible basis for forming opinions about the war and politics in those troubled regions."
