CD Reviews

Absolutely beautiful performances of Irish favourites

"This is a package assembled by the Toronto-based Avalon new age label, teaming up Oliver Schroer - a Canadian folk/alternative violinist - with honey-voiced Toronto celtic singer Kate Crossan. The results are simply inspired. Crossan, who first gained notice with a band called Kitty's Kitchen, could sing the phone book and make it sound like a lilting breeze wafting over the Cliffs of Moher, and she brings out all the beauty in these 11 songs. Schroer has several solo discs out, but managed to curb his ambition enough to frame Crossan in delicate, wispy arrangments using acoustic guitar, piano, flute, uilleann pipes and violin. Where he does try something out of the ordinary, it works very well. Just listen to the extended version of Danny Boy. Here's the songlist:
1. As I Roved Out
2. Carrickfergus
3. Bonny Portmore
4. Galway Bay
5. My Lagan Love
6. The Flower of Magherally
7. Danny Boy
8. Come By The Hills
9. Sial a Run
10. I Know Where I'm Going
11. Bheir mi O In the end, Voice Of The Celtic Heart will take you to the Ireland of your dreams...a misty, romantic place that you'll want to visit as soon as possible."

"I bought this CD in April of 2001,at a gift shop in a resort hotel I was visiting. It is the antithesis of what I've listened to all my life-Zeppelin,Cream,60's acid rock etc...Crossan's pure voice transports the listener into another dimension.Funny as it seems the inclusion of "Danny Boy" was probably the catalyst to my purchase, but I've now fallen in love with classics like "Carrickfergus",the lamenting for lost place and time,"As I Roved Out",about love lost, and all the other selections.I'm going to wear out my laser.I listen to this night and day.Crossan's voice is pure magic, the backing musicians are subtle and complement the vocalist seamlessly.I've discovered a hidden gem-or should I say a pot of musical gold!!!"

"Kate Crossan has a quality to her voice that keeps you coming back and back to this CD. It is upbeat but relaxing. It transports you to another time and another place. I continue to search for any others CD she has recorded."
