CD Reviews

Superb performances
D. R. Schryer | Poquoson, VA United States | 06/10/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Several years ago as I was driving I turned my radio on to our local classical music station and heard the finest performance of the Mendelssohn violin concerto I had heard to that time. When I got to my destination I sat in the car with the radio on for I had to know what violinist was giving this superb performance. It was Frank Peter Zimmermann, a violinist I had not heard of at that time. Needless to say, when I found this recording (then at full price) I bought it and have enjoyed it immensely ever since. I also bought several other fine recordings by Zimmermann. Since then I have encountered many fine performances of the Mendelssohn violin concerto but only one on a par with Zimmermann's, that by Gil Shaham (which is coupled with a sublime performance of the Bruch Concerto No. 1). If you love the violin and haven't yet heard Frank Peter Zimmermann, please do yourself a favor and buy this outstanding -- and budget priced -- recording. The lovely early concerto by Mendelssohn is a welcome filler."
Exceptional Playing.......Romance Abound..............

"The concerto in E minor has been recorded time and time again. However, Frank Peter Zimmermann, gives us an exceptional performance; as good as Perlman, Menuhin, or any other of the greats. I purchased it after listening to the music clips. I had nothing by Frank in my collection; so I decided what the heck, lets add him and its been well worth it. The recording is underrated and most likely overshadowed by all of the great violinists who have recorded it before him. This is truly a "Dark Horse" performance and recording. The second mvt. of the VC in E minor has to be one of the most romantic pieces of music ever composed, God Bless Felix and Frank, for they reach inside and touch my soul. If you need a newer version of Mendelssohn's VC in E minor consider this CD, you won't be disappointed. Oh, the VC in D minor isn't too shabby."
