CD Reviews

Additional descriptive information available
Lloyd K. Komatsu | Inver Grove Heights, MN | 01/16/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Descriptive information is available in the catalog section of the Dynamic Records website [...]. The large majority are live recordings, mostly from the 1990s, but a few as recent as 2005 and 2007. Two recordings each of Norma and La Sonnambula are included, one recent and one "historic." The historic recordings feature Caballe/Pretre and Callas/Bernstein, respectively. I'm still saving my pennies to purchase the set and therefore can't comment personally on the performances or sound quality, but there is a detailed review by William Trotter in the Jan/Feb 2009 issue of American Record Guide magazine. He is quite positive about the less-often-recorded operas, and quite negative about the modern recordings of Norma and La Sonnambula (but very positive about the historic ones). Probably best suited to people who already have some Bellini in their collections (especially Norma and La Sonnambula), and would like to explore further."
