CD Reviews

Mecyssne creates a big sound that is perfect for summertime.
06/10/1998
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Mecyssne lays out a big sound that is full of the various colors and textures that make this mostly southern-jazzy-blues concoction so sweet. With plenty of tips-of-the-hat to Al Hirt, Cab Calloway, Bessie Smith and big band leader Harry James, Mecyssne creates an American roots music that has all but been forgotten by younger generations. Vocally strong and clear, the songwriting and musicanship underscores the quality of this entertaining project. From the lush arrangements of "A Girl That's Hip" and "Small Town Grapevine" to the high drama of "Lower Broadway," the artist and his cohorts deliver the goods. The inclusion of a bare bones version of Walter Hyatt's "Going To New Orleans" rounds things out nicely. Sparkling and fresh, with an ample dash of humor, this project is perfect for the summertime when the humidity is 100% and the heat won't let up. Mecyssne effectively creates a mood that invites the listener to settle in for the afternoon with a tall cool one. It is an indulgence that should not be missed."
