A chance buy that turned out to be anything but....
acid_win | 03/07/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"A sheer chance buy whilst out on the CD rounds. As it is from Jazzanova/Compost it appeared in the chill out/Lounge/Trip hop section. However, it is all that and more. It is a very smooth latin sounding album. His voice is very smooth and certainly in the vein of a Stephen Simmons. It is very much a warm evening laid back album but slightly more upbeat than the usual downtempo grooves. Some tracks such as "Spirit" remind me of some Style Council, Cafe Paris stuff.Sometimes it is the chance buys that really impress and this guy certainly has a future having already carved out his niche. There are some intelligent lyrics such as on "Better Place" and "Sound of the Samba" the album opener is a very catchy number. There are also some sweet ballads such as "Runaway Train" which certainly bring out a lot of the beauty in his voice. There's so much more but I could be here all day. So....All that's left to say is go out and get it."
The new sound of soul that you may never hear in the states
Jcohn B. Jackson | Chicago, IL 60601 | 11/20/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Victor Davis can be considered the Jon Lucien of the new soul movement. Combining a soulfully pure soul sound with a touch of a Brazilian house and jazz groove. Victor takes you from the dance floor, lounge type groove, to the bedroom (if you are with the right person) without missing a beat. The R&B world need to take notice that there is another artist that is doing his own thing and not following the typical boring rules. If you love Lewis Taylor, Stephen Simmonds or D'Angelo, you have to give this artist a close listen. Jazzanova and Compost have done it again. If he ever gets the love in the states that this cd deserves watch out. It is a must have."
