The Best From The Best
James Bergey | Philadelphia, PA United States | 11/04/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"It is a good thing that Amazon has finally managed to make available this collection of songs from Versus -- a crucial addition for any fan. Although culled from B-sides, singles and compilation discs, "Dead Leaves" actually emits the feel of a wholly executed album. From the blistering "Astronaut" which kicks off this collection to the mournful "Crazy", these songs are classic Versus with every single one a winner. Featured here are the usual stellar mix of vocals from Richard and Fontaine which allow songs like "Bright Light", "Sunburned" and "Flax" to approach the sublime. The tightness with which the band plays lends real power to the rockers on the disc and an ethereal beauty to the more melodic offerings. While shades of Sonic Youth surface from time to time, the originality of the Versus "sound" identifies them as far and away one of the best bands currently playing and crafting new music today. An invigorating boost to even the most jaded of music fans, I can't recommend this disc enough."
One of the best singles comps ever

(4 out of 5 stars)

""dead leaves" could easily be an album and not a singles comp...i wore this one out folks. the near tone deaf deadpan semi-snarky vocaling of richard balaut (sp?) and fontaine toupes (sp?) is truly something to behold. they were also quite the live show...4 tin foil stars."
