CD Reviews

Great Collection

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Vernon Garrett has had a longer career, making many recordings for many different labels and despite this he still remains underrated. This British Import CD collects a wide variety of tracks from different stages of his career, many with his late wife Jewel. The first twelve tracks are just Vernon, kicking off with the rocking "If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time" (here in an alternate take for some reason) which was a local hit. Other fine tracks include the jumping "You and Me Together" and the grinding slow blues "I Made My Own World". Many of the tracks stem from Garrett's extremely rare LP `Going to My Baby's Place' and it's too bad the whole LP wasn't issued in this CD because these songs are fantastic, including the LP's title track and the funky "One Man's Loss". The duets between Vernon and Jewel are good, though not as strong as the solo Vernon tracks. Also included are live recordings in Oakland from 1964 with Vern and Jewel that are also very enjoyable and the sound quality is surprisingly very good.

Despite the few small complaints, this is a terrific collection of music by an artist who deserves compilations like these. If you like 60's soul with touches of blues and funk than you will definitely enjoy this fine collection by this underrated soul great.
