Unforgettable Vera
Matthew G. Sherwin | last seen screaming at Amazon customer service | 10/02/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Vera Lynn always gave so much of herself whenever she performed; and the songs she recorded on this album prove it. Her excellent sense of timing and her sophisticated phrasing make her talent stand out; she could really sing alongside the best of them and she deserves more recognition than she gets today. The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent and I like that artwork, too.

"Land Of Hope and Glory" gets a most passionate treatment from Vera who delivers this to perfection--and beyond! Vera never sounded better and that's grand. "Those Were The Days" is romantic despite its melancholy flavor; and I love it when Vera outdoes even herself on "What A Wonderful World." "What A Wonderful World" has a great arrangement for the piano and Vera sings this without ever letting go of a single superfluous note; I am very impressed. "It Had To Be You" uses the strings very well in the musical arrangement but wisely the musicians never try to steal the show from Vera; she remains squarely front and center which is right where she belonged and still belongs!

"Anniversary Waltz" charms me with its beauty; and "I'll Be Seeing You" gets the royal treatment from Vera Lynn who performs this faultlessly; that music fits in perfectly with her vocals. I love it! "Strangers In The Night" is very pretty; and there's yet another gem in "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square." "As Time Goes By" from "Casablanca" is very easy on the ear; the brass, strings and piano work wonders for the arrangement. I also really like "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" which is certainly another highlight of this CD.

"I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter" shines so brightly in Vera's capable hands; this timeless ballad sparkles and glows as Vera delivers it beautifully. Vera handles complex tempo and key and changes like the pro she always was. "Now Is The Hour" has Vera singing at her usual very best; and her excellent diction makes her performance very memorable, to say the least. "I'm Beginning To See The Light" is another charmer with a perfect arrangement as Vera handles this seemingly effortlessly--but of course we know that it really wasn't all that easy. Vera's talent always carried her through.

"Unforgettable" is so beautiful; and "Amazing Grace" is gorgeous as The Mike Sammes Singers join Vera to make this extra special. Moreover, I always enjoy hearing Vera Lynn sing "White Cliffs Of Dover." What a terrific song written when we looked forward to the end of the Second World War! We'll Meet Again" is very well done; and the CD ends strong with Vera Lynn performing "My Way." "My Way" is very, very well done and I would like to think that the great Frank Sinatra, who loved to sing this tune, would have certainly approved of Vera's rendition of this song!

Vera Lynn brought so much happiness to people all over the world with her outstanding voice and talent; and this is a wonderful album for her fans. This is also an excellent starter CD for people just discovering Vera's incredible talent; and even fans of classic pop vocals in general would do well to add this CD to their collections."

"My husband mentioned that he would like a version of "We'll Meet Again" by the singer that performed it at the end of the movie Dr. Strangelove. I found this CD and he loves it! The quality of the recording is very nice -- and Vera Lynn has a wonderful voice."
