CD Reviews

Great Songs But Not the Best Compilation
Rob Michaels | portage, mi. United States | 06/18/2004
(3 out of 5 stars)

"I've already reviewed several old Venom albums, so I won't say too much about the music on this CD. For the most part, it's pretty good stuff, with just a few exceptions. True, the sound quality could be a little better, but what are you gonna do? There are several other Venom anthology CDs that sound better, but this one has a few "rare" tracks that are difficult, if not impossible to find elsewhere. The first three songs are demos that can also be found on "Skeletons in the Closet"; "Under a Spell" is different than the version on "Calm Before the Storm"; "Nothing Sacred", also from that album session, is a song I've never seen anywhere except here; "Dead Love" is also from that period, but was originally released on the live LP "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" and was originally called "Love Amongst the Dead" (that version was better though); "If You Wanna War" & "Surgery", with Cronos' replacement Tony "Demolition Man" Dolan, are two songs that only appeared here (I Think); "Countess Bathory (Live)" also with Dolan, was featured on a Venom live video called "Venom Live '90". Now onto the disc as a whole. The record company, Deadline Music, a division of Cleopatra (Huh? Whoever heard of those jerks?) are a bunch of inept idiots who have no idea what they are doing! First, on the back of the book, some of the songs aren't even listed in the correct order; second, "1000 Days in Sodom" is listed as live but it's NOT; "At War With Satan" is supposed to be a demo, but only the first three tracks are. It's also not even the complete version of it! Third, there is nothing from "Possessed" or "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik". "The 7 Gates of Hell" is also missing. Those morons at Deadline/Cleopatra don't have the brains to release a Venom recording of any kind. Still, even after all that, this CD (or one of the other "In Memoriums..") might be a good purchase because of some of the "rarer" tracks. But that's the ONLY reason to buy it."
