Album DescriptionRembetica, a music of the Greek underworld, was born in the port cities of Asia Minor and the Aegean during the 19th century. With its recurrent theme of lost love, often delivered through a cloud of hashish smoke, Rembetica is soulful, powerful music, which offers a compelling listening experience. In the first half of the twentieth century, when Rembetica was at its peak, several great female singers were recorded. These women were true "Rembétisses" -- free spirits who defied the conventions of the times. A selection of their finest performances is presented here.
