One Long Groove
Bruce Kendall | Southern Pines, NC | 02/08/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Again there is precious little info provided here, so allow me to be of service. This is an excellent recording, featuring Larry Goldings on Organ, Kenny Garrett (alto sax), Joshua Redman (tenor sax), Peter Bernstein (guitar), Brad Mehldau (piano), Clarence Seay (bass) and Brian Blade (drums). It was recorded and mixed at the Hit Factory in NYC and is a 1995 release.1. Blue Grass: an original Goldings composition, featuring some great free-form organ playing from LG.2. Get Out of Town: Cole Porter standard, again featuring Goldings' masterful organ playing. 3. My Foolish Heart: Ned Washington, V. Young composers. Very smooth, late night tune, featuring Joshua Redman blowing his tenor sax every so sweetly.4. The Sidewinder: L. Morgan composition. Roney and Redman melding on a snappy little number.5. Larry Young: Roney original tune with great ensemble interchange. Roney excells on his trumpet solos. 6. Killing Me Softly with His Song: (C. Fox/N.Gimble) Kenny Garrett brings great feeling and fresh playing to this standard.7. Sid's Ahead: (Miles Davis) Ensemble playing. Very mellow. Redman takes a very Miles like excursion about halfway into the track. Garret responds. Excellent groove.8. Nice Pass: Pianist Mehedu taking a Bill Evans type turn on the keys. Nice jump.9. Beluga Swing: Garrett composition. Garrett and Roney dominate. And swing they do!10. Nature Boy: (E. Ahbez) Hard to bring a fresh perspective to this one, but Roney and co. manage it rather well. Roney manages to wring the mood out of every note. Shades of Miles, but distictive in its own right. 11. Switch Blade: Redman penned. Nice bookend piece to the opening cut. Redman and Garrett have a go at it. Just good, solid jazz. These guys were all at the top of their game for this recording. All are extraordinarily talented musicians and the CD was excellently engineered. Great mixing. Definitely a CD to add to your collection!BEK8. 8."
