"Ukrainian Voices/Voix Ukrainiennes CD - This excellent collection of Ukrainian folk music is a real treat for anyone who loves the folk music genre. It reflects the Ukrainian cultural history that is surprisingly still intact, despite many years of repression by the Soviet system, and even by those who came before. The vocal technique, the precision of the polyphony, the fullness and the unique timbre of the natural voices, which are "open" even in the highest registers, are astounding. Some of the women who sang these songs wept during the recording session, because many of the songs were forbidden by Moscow only several years earlier. Any allusion to independent Ukraine was suppressed. "The heritage passed from generation to generation, by word of mouth, in a hushed voice and with doors and windows closed, with fear in their herarts" The great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy declared that no folk music has expressed the national personality of a people as strongly as Ukrainian folk music. The CD was produced in France."
Finally, a folk recording with variety!

"Though it is interesting (and a little strange) to see Ukrainian song titles translated literally into French (it takes some listening or thinking hard about the title to figure out which song it is), the variety of styles is nicely represented in this volume. From raw, open-voiced a cappella tunes to heavy and orchestral patriotic songs, "Ukrainian Voices" is a wonderful taste of what Ukraine has to offer to the folk music world. I would have liked to hear even more a cappella "village recordings" with women's voices, but there are quite a few here nevertheless. Quality song choices and wonderful execution of the styles."

"I found this CD to be a true representation of Ukrainian village folk music. It brought back many memories of my visits to these villages. Many of these songs and this particular type of vocal singing have been forgotten in the USA. If you like village singing, you will love this CD."

"The collection of vocal singing music is superb here, and the quality of the recording is equally as good. The recording was done in France - so the titles of the songs on the CD are shown in French - but the music is 100% Ukrainian and beautiful.
The liner notes (which are in English) explain how powerful it was for many of these native singers to finally be able to sing and enjoy these songs in public. The Soviets had strongly stamped out any trace of native Ukrainian culture, most especially their songs. You can hear that heartache in the singers' voices at times during the songs, how much they love and treasure this music.
It's hard for me to even choose a favorite amongst the songs. Some of them are slow and poignant. Others are full of life and energy, perfect for dancing around to. You definitely don't have to know Ukrainian to appreciate these songs - you feel the emotion and meaning through the song itself. I love the harmonies of "Ivana Koupala", I adore the fast paced swirling harmonies of "Tcheremchina", and I could go on. Every song has its own particular personality and each is great.
