CD Reviews

The best truckin' value for your dollar
Jon E Johnson | Boston, Massachusetts | 01/12/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Largely (though by no means entirely) made up of gems from the great Starday catalogue, "Truckin' On" has its flaws but probably stands as the most complete collection of trucker country to be found. At 52 songs on 2 discs the pluses are numerous, including most of the great hits from the likes of Red Sovine, the Willis Brothers, Del Reeves, and other giants of the genre. The collection also includes several lesser-known tracks, such as Minnie Pearl's rarely-heard "Giddy-Up-Go Answer." There are two main complaints about the collection. For one, a number of tracks are represented not in their original versions but with re-recordings. "Movin' On" is here, for instance, but as recorded by Mike Lunceford, not in its original Merle Haggard rendition. Same with "Convoy" and a few others. In addition, a few important artists are completely unrepresented, including Red Simpson and Dick Curless. These are minor complaints, though. For $20 you get 2 1/2 hours of trucker country, most of which is top-notch, and that's value-for-money in my book any day of the week."
Hit the road jack

"this could be consolidated to an AMAZING single cd compilation. as it stands, there's a lot of filler on this; some of which has little or nothing to do with truck driving. kansas city? tie a yellow ribbon? a harmonica driven version of take me home country roads? damn it, neither john denver nor tony orlando was ever behind the wheel of an 18 wheeler, so why are they here??? other gripes include duplication of the same song by different artists in basically the same arrangements, and some just plain ordinary boring numbers. that said, you get lots of red sovine & dave dudley, some cool tunes by minnie pearl, grandpa jones, and the willis brothers, and a killer (no pun intended) stretch on disc 2 concerning trucks wrecks. unless you are an insane truck driving music collector (and frankly, who isnt?) (billy joel isnt, thats fer sure), this will be good enough for you. PUT DOWN THE STROKES CD AND BUY THIS, YA PUTZ!!"

"Wow! What a great compiliation of trucking songs. It's a pity they didn't include more artist info & recording dates. (We IPod'ers need this info.)"
