CD Reviews

All the Tommie Sunshine you can handle...
Daniel W. Kelly | Long Island, NY United States | 09/07/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Tommie practically has the market cornered on hard alt. rock dance mixes, so this disc is a welcome treat for fans of this style, with its clear 80s influences in both music styles and vocals. If you're into these types of bands, they're practically all here in many hard to find remixes, most of which run 5 minutes or more. It's also a treat to get personal liner notes from Sunshine on each track.

Track times and notes:

CD1

1. the only difference...panic! At the disco (4:59) (great vocals and hard dance rhythms and synths)

2. wine red...hush sound (4:59) (much more melodic male and female vocals, plus plenty of guitar and piano, and of course, dance beats. This is a mini-epic!)

3. jealous girls...gossip (7:08) (more of a `punk rock girl' vibe, with some rough female vocals)

4. tony the beat...the sounds (4:25) (The Sounds are awesome even before they are remixed. This mix isn't all that more danceable than the original, but that uber-catchy chorus hook comes shining through)

5. night on fire...VHS or Beta (5:54) (lots of electronic bleeps and a super new wave sounding vocal combine with clunky electronic beats and guitars. This one's hot)

6. mama's room...under the influence of giants (7:08) (a surprisingly mellow mix by Sunshine, with many strings in the background as well. Very melodic male vocals)

7. here in your arms...hellogoodbye (6:53) (awesome to have almost the whole tommie sunshine mix present, but the original is still the best mix)

8. emotion commotion...glitch with Tommie sunshine (4:44) (I'm pretty sure this one samples the rhythm track from Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust". Hot dance track with make and female vocals.)

9. straight to video...mindless self indulgence (5:05) (the band name says it all. The vocal hook is ridiculously self-indulgent and guaranteed to get stuck in your head. It sounds mostly like a thrash metal vocal dropped on a dance record!)

10. lips like morphine...kill Hannah (7:48) (great female alt. rock vocals. This is a fantastic mix of this band's song. And it's nearly 8 minutes long!)

11. 23 minutes in Brussels...my robot friend (5:02) (very robotic. Some male vocals. A little long, but a good track overall)

12. limit of your mind...Tommie sunshine (4:50) (another robotic performance, from Sunshine himself)

CD2

1. dance among the ruins...tommie sunshine (7:31) (mostly non-vocal, this rock/dance stomper has a vocal hook if you wait long enough)

2. le disko...shiny toy guns (6:32) (not my favorite song by this electro alternative band, this mix does do the song justice. And we get over 6 minutes of it. The center break is fantastic)

3. body jack...marc romboy & Tommie sunshine (5:49) (eh. This one's kinda boring.)

4. dance dance...fall out boy (5:52) (eureka! Nearly 6 minutes of this hard-to-get mix by one of the most popular bands around)

5. I just wanna live...good charlotte (5:35) (an oldie but goodie by Good Charlotte. Not a bad mix, but nothing special. Good for collectors though)

6. running from...john acquaviva & madox with Tommie sunshine (5:37) (best part of this song is the old school new wave swirling synth riff)

7. let the poison spill from your throat...the faint (4:49) (I can never get enough of the retro electro dance rock sounds of The Faint, so any remix is welcome by them)

8. boys wanna be her...peaches (4:40) (Really good mix that breathes some energy into this alternative electronic artist's song)

9. Tokyo pollution...tommie sunshine (7:16) (hard dubby electro house. Too long a track considering the lack of variety in the song)

10. at home he's a tourist...gang of four (4:21) (amazing. Sunshine digs into the old punk files to bring out a Gang of Four classic. Not a bad mix either)

11. Will You...P.O.D. (5:09) (hard vocal performance from P.O.D., and the mix compliments it perfectly. Clunk dance track)

12. Y Control...yeah yeah yeahs (7:03) (a total treat to have the yeah yeah yeahs remixed into a dance groove, and we get a full 7 minutes of it)
