Synopsis

Product Description
THREE SCORE AND TEN is seven CDs (144 tracks) in a ten by ten inch hardback book, with dust jacket containing 108 profusely illustrated, full colour pages with a narrative portrait of Topic from 1939 to the present day. Also included separately is a complete discography of every Topic release from 1939 to the newest releases in 2009.There are 144 tracks that cover all aspects of Topic's recording history in 7 themed CDs with many rare tracks never before on CD. The extensive text gives a detailed recording and social history with profiles of the essential recordings, principle artists and key personages. The many hundreds of illustrations are a revelation in themselves, anchoring the whole project with photos of the artists, album sleeves, advertising leaflets, snapshots and memorabilia.A quote from Three Score and Ten sums it all up pretty nicely: 'From its first release in 1939 and it's origins in the Workers' Music Association through the folk revival to the present day Topic Records has always endeavoured to make classic and definitive recordings of traditional music available to the public; a catalogue of records to inform and inspire the listener.Since the 1950s, Topic has stood virtually alone in continuing to make recordings of traditional music and the tradition based music of the British Isles. The aims and objects of the Workers' Music Association (as published in 1944) still stand as a fair description of the ambitions of Topic Records in 2009:
- To present to the people their rich musical inheritance
- To utilise fully the stimulating power of music to inspire people
- To stimulate the composition of music appropriate to our time
- To foster and further the art of music on the principle that true art can move the people
- to work for the betterment of society(this quote is from page 92 of the book)'So lovingly preserved, so passionately protected, each of the 144 tracks offers a compelling story in its own right collectively representing the proud and unique heritage evoked by the rich Topic archive. Tony Engle and curator/producer David Suff have worked wonders to turn a daunting project into a package of real beauty that leaves you in no doubt of its artistic importance but is a lot of fun too. 5 stars.' MOJO'Topic Records' 70th Birthday present to the world...you can hear a world moving through altered states. 5 stars.' Uncut'It's one of the finest boxed sets I have ever seen...as you proceed deeper and deeper, it's as if you've stumbled into some vast seam of rare and essential minerals...you know you're among the raw stuff of life here. 5 stars' Songlines'The complete package is as important a CD set as any ever issued, allowing us to enjoy and learn from a really important musical heritage that continues to reverberate throughout so much music today.' Shindig'Topic has produced a lavish - no other word for it - publication...a reminder of how vital Topic has been to the development of the revival - we couldn't have done it without you Topic.' EDS - EFDSS Magazine'Three Score & Ten is a powerful charm that will change the way you hear music, and maybe even the way you see the world. 4 stars.' Sunday Times/Culture'This is far more than just a finely packaged retrospective CD set. It's an important slice of British and Irish musical history, with a few US and European songs added. Topic records, the oldest truly independent record label in the world, and the most important company in the story of British folk music, celebrates its 70th birthday this summer, and this fascinating, thoughtfully produced seven-CD set and 108-page hardback book marks the anniversary in style. 5 stars.' The Guardian

CD Reviews

The most respected of all British folk music companies

(5 out of 5 stars)

"To celebrate 70 years of great performances on their eminent label, Topic has selected more than twice that number of tracks, a full gross, and packed them onto 7 CDs, now available in this imported box set at an eminently reasonable price. Some of my favorites among the artists represented include Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, Dave Swarbrick, Anne Briggs, Frankie Armstrong, June Tabor, The Watersons, The Boys of the Lough, Battlefield Band, Dick Gaughan, Eliza Carthy, Martin Simpson, Ewan MacColl, Richard Thompson, and The Silly Sisters. If you don't know who these amazing performers are, it's time you were introduced to this music and its offshoots. Many obscure but worthy songs, singers, and musicians are here, together with tracks from other European countries and a few folks across the pond, like Pete Seeger and Paul Robeson, who were profoundly influenced by the traditional music of the British Isles.

Since Amazon has not listed the tracks on this set, I will do so:

Much more than another boxed set

"This is a very handsome package. The CDs are housed in a LP sized book with a great narrative and pictures. The project was obviously a labor of love for those that worked on it, and you can see their effort and attention to detail on every page. This format works great for storing the CDs also.

The collection of music is fascinating. The listening experience of each CD is like stumbling upon a great radio program. I generally prefer to listen to CDs of single artists, but this is much more than a sampler. It provides recordings of many musicians that are long gone, and the opportunity to pursue and seek out CDs or LPs that you didn't know existed. I personally like the sequence of songs and artists on this recording, but I do recognize that many audiophiles are not keen on compilations. I guess it is not for everybody.

The package is altogether engrossing. Guests who see it on my coffee table will pick the book up and look at it for ten minutes (some much longer). For people who grew up in the 60s or 70s, it has a pleasent nostalgiac feel, especially if they were interested in folk music and politics.

The lyrics of some of the songs are very amusing and I find something of merit in every track. I wont nescessarily seek out recordings of every artist, but I will definitely pursue some recordings.

It makes a great gift to ones self or to many people over a certain age. I have bought two and will be buying more for close friends.

I would recommend buying this product from Amazon direct. I ordered from an outfit in SC that were $10 cheaper but canceled the order after 2 weeks. Also, carefully check the packaging. It is not particularly fragile, but the book can get dinged in transit. Amazon took one I returned without any problem, and I'm not sure an independent would be as gracious."
