CD Reviews

Cool Stuff From Japan
W. Davidson | Melbourne, Australia | 11/06/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Bungalow have a reputation for releasing amazing records, it is well deserved. As implied by the title of this CD all the artists featured are Japanese, what's more, all are fabulous. It includes better known J-Pop names such as pop dilettante Kahimi Karie who sings her big hit "Good Morning World" (which started it's life as a make-up commercial in Japan), there's the incredible Pizzicato Five representing the Shibuya region and pop superstar Cornelius. There's also loads of bands not as familiar, but equally wonderful. I love what Les 5-4-3-2-1 does with Bacharach's "Bond Street " (turning it into a go-go classic that owes a very large and obvious debt to Stereolab's "Ping Pong"), Date of Birth supply "Aim At El Paso", which sounds like a groovy reworking of Morricone's "The Good, the Bad and The Ugly" and Hajime Tachibana's version of "Moog Power" is a worthy salute to the song's composer Hugo Montenegro. Even if you have a passing interest in lounge-styled (I used the term loosely) music, and indeed in modern Japanese pop music (which you should), you'll love this."
A Fun and Enjoyable Work of Art

"I went into this purchase being familiar with only Cornelius(whose music is brilliant) and Pizzicato Five. Those two bands were the only things that inspired me to get it. But I was blown away by all of the other music on this recording. "Sweden, Heaven and Hell" was a great surprise, bringing in a classic Muppets song into the mix. Also, "I did Rock and Roll Music" surprised me with the arrays of vocals on the track. These songs are fun, and remarkably light-hearted. Quite simply, the music is relaxing and on the converse, danceable. I am not disappointed."
