CD Reviews

Great Live Soul
Robert Lanxner | Millsboro, Pa | 08/31/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is a great live Soul CD. The song selection is very good and the sound quality is top notch. Beware though that there are only 15 tracks not the 16 listed on the Amazon track listing. What's up with that? Missing is You make me feel brand new by the Stylistics. Made me mad so I gave it a 4 instead of a 5."
Time has come today

"SUPERSTARS OF SEVENTIES SOUL LIVE is the soundtrack to a 2004 PBS pledge drive program. The album's liner notes try to sell the listener on the superiority of live performance vs. studio recording, calling the latter "Too sterile. Too rigid." Fine in theory, at least.

Besides an echoey and shrill sound on these tracks, the passage of thirty years or so hasn't been all that kind to the performers. The audio insufficiencies might have been eliminated with better acoustics, but nothing can help the advance of years, short of a deep drink from the Fountain Of Youth.

The best in-concert performances are invariably contemporary with the original songs, not thirty years removed-- a fact that this album is testament to. Stick with the "sterile" and "rigid" originals. (includes eight-page booklet)
