Evocative Anthems of an Era
D. Schulz | PLANO, TX USA | 04/03/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The book from which the movie derives is a classic, and perhaps one of the earliest versions of "New Journalism," the story of the Columbia University protests told in first person by a student participant. The movie from which the soundtrack derives is, unfortunately, the weakest link in the chain...an awful piece of cinema. BUT the soundtrack... oh, my, the soundtrack... stands side by side with the soundtrack of Easy Rider as a collection of anthems of the 1960s. Have some real fun: get the book, put on the record, and trip on back..."
Musical Alchemy
Nerol Yesmar | Southern California | 10/11/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The dictionary defines Alchemy as the process of changing base metals into gold and to discover the elixir of perpetual youth. This CD is Musical Alchemy. THE FILM, "Strawberry Statement", had it's moment in the sun. In hindsight, it's a study in naivete. THE MUSIC, however, which still shines as brightly as the sun, is an eclectic mixture of styles and texturs. From classical, "Also Sprach Zarathustra" and "Concerto in D minor" to a down-home jug band version of "Fishin' Blues", there's something for everyone here. In context or out of context of the film this is a remarkably timeless collection. How can you go wrong with the tight harmonies of early Crosby, Still, Nash and, of course Neil Young or Thunderclap Newman? The music on this CD is held together by the perfect musical bookends, the folksie "Circle Game" and the John Lennon anthem, "Give Peace a Chance". How can you go wrong? YOU CAN'T."
