Featuring nearly 80 minutes of live music from today's most popular Native artists, Sounds of Indian Summer represents the best of the National Museum of the American Indian's annual summer music series. The album showcases indigenous musicians who blend electric guitars, drum sets, synthesizers, and other modern tools with various traditional instruments (e.g., South American quena, sicus, and charango), vocal techniques (Yu'pik 'throat singing'), and some songs that reach far back in time. These artists, reflecting their own influences and preferences, create in such musical forms as reggae, blues, and rock 'n' roll. They are contemporary storytellers who thread their music with Native themes, such as identity, cultural survival, experiences with racism, and ethnic pride.
