CD Reviews

Worthwhile collection for 70s soul fans...
Allison E. Faulkner | Glendale Heights, IL United States | 08/26/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"These hits span the period between mid 1973 and mid 1976, a "transitional" period in 70s soul music - there is a marked contrast between the songs heard in 1973 and those heard in 1976. For this reason the collection sounds a bit disjointed historically. Nonetheless, there are some wonderful, hard to find gems in this collection. The superb, soulful "So Very Hard To Go" is the best known song for the Tower of Power, and exemplifies the sound of 73/74, along with the tender Philly-Soul influenced ballad "Three Ring Circus". In 1975, the harder influences of Funk and Disco began to dominate the soul sound, as can be heard in the danceable "Do It Any Way You Wanna", "I Love Music", "Love Rollercoaster", and "Movin'". "Shoeshine Boy", "Bad Luck", and "Why Can't We Be Friends" are also excellent songs to round out this collection. The 70s soul music lover will enjoy the diverse songs in this collection."
