A fantastic collection of dubstep

"For the longest time I associated dub exclusively with artists such as Kruder & Dorfmeister and Thievery Corporation. Eventually I realized that there were all sorts of other artists such as Pole doing crazy things with dub, which led me to dubstep. My situation is a little strange because I'm not a fan of reggae music and dub that is heavy on the reggae influence is not really my thing. However, dubstep as a style takes the things I love about dub and mixes them with techno - a winning combination, in my view.
That brings us to "Round Black Ghosts", a compilation of Scape artists compiled by label owner, Stefan Betke (Pole). This is by far the best dubstep collection I've encountered. There are no weak tracks here - all range from good to great. The tracks are heavily synchopated, as one would expect from this style, but clean, crisp percussion sounds and a variety of deep basses. The bass sounds are particularly interesting to me because they all have a lot of character. There are so many tracks out there using generic, or at least simple, bass sounds, but not here. It makes for an aurally pleasing listen, and one that is sure to test the lower frequency range of your speakers.
The texture is spacious, but with a pleasing ambience. Most of the tracks are primarily drums and low bass with only momentary fragments of melody or harmonies punctuating the sound. This is a refreshing change from dub techno artists such as Basic Channel who make music with so much echo and reverb that everything becomes murky. Basic Channel has their place and I love their music, but this is a nice counterpoint to it. After you listen to one of their marathon sides like Quandrant's Dub EP, this is a nice followup to let your ears rest.
My top picks would probably be Pole's "Alles Klar", Ramadanman's "Response", and Pangaea's "Coiled." It's interesting to hear how Pole's sound has changed since Steingarten. It's harder with more of an edge. Compared to Pole's early work (1, 2, 3), one wouldn't think it was the same artist. Pangaea always produces great sounding tracks, and "Coiled" is probably one of their best.
Sometimes when you look at a record label compilation, you've got some great artists and some other artists who probably wouldn't be on the CD if the label wasn't trying to promote them. I don't really get that sense here - everything deserves to be here. I would recommend this not only to dub fans, but to techno and electronic music fans in general. If you've not heard dubstep before, this is a great introduction."
