CD Reviews

Rough Guide: Tango.

"There is a lot of good Tango music, but the people who made this sampler album weren't able to find any of it. It's like they were trying to put together the strangest, most marginal stuff they could find. The singing is distractingly stylized, and most of the music is just plain odd. It's hard to dance to, and even harder to listen to. If you want a good sampler album, get "The Fabulous Tango Collection" or the movie soundtrack to "The Tango Lesson"."
Holy cats, the liner notes say "introduction"....

"this is a taste, a fun get-to-know-you cd. the songs are varied, and god forbid some stray from the standard tango. i for one like the way some of the artists incorporate their own flavor into the music. if you're looking to do your dissertation on tango, then by all means, this is not for you. if you want a cd to eat dinner to, drive your car to, clean house to, and generally enjoy life to, well then give this one a go."
Not so bad...

"I agree that the heavily stylised singing gets in the way of enjoying the music. In addition, they only included some of the 'more listenable' (ie less danceable) of Piazzolla's work, which is a bother as he's my favourite dance-music composer...In all, it has some interesting tracks, and makes an interesting addition to my car's CD stack. Not a great one though."
