CD Reviews

Great obscure early rockers
09/12/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a collection of late-50s rock'n'roll, mostly by relatively obscure musicians, who scored at-best regional hits with this material. (The main exception is Larry Williams, who had a few top ten hits in his day, and who is represented on this CD by a a single track, "She Said Yeah", that would later be covered by the Rolling Stones.) The material here is great. These are mostly west coast bands, playing with the same manic energy that their rockabilly contemporaries showed."
What's good on this album is fantastic and indispensable.

"The tunes that to me justify the purchase of this cd are:1.) The Pentagons:It's Spring Again Happy and rocking, this is a real special sounding record, it's hard to explain, I would say it's the ultimate springtime record (of which there's not alot!), it really has a vibe, great melody, performance, arrangement and, as most of the songs on this cd, an incredible deep groove provided by Earl Palmer.
2.) Rene Hall's Orchestra Featuring Willie Joe and his Unitar: Twitchy -Simply, one of the greatest rock'n'roll instrumentals of all time, super intense and hypnotic, dirty, it'll make your eyes bug out.
3.) Bob Landers with Willie Joe and his Unitar-Cherokee Dance...go listen to the sample of this song....hypnotic, the "Unitar" has a real down and dirty sound, it's a stabbing kind of sound, and just listen to that gravelly voice of Bob landers!! Great groove and back-ups, listen to the whole sample, it takes you up till the beginning of the "Unitar" solo which you can hear just as it fades. By the way, the "Unitar" is also the featured instrument on the song "Twitchy" I just described(#2)
4.) The Titans version of Don't You Just Know It, quintessential New Orleans record and if you don't already own it, you should. Every bit as good as Huey "Piano" Smith's version, I like both.
5.) The Casualairs- Satisfied....a totally different kind of song! They were a white band from New York, sounds like early 60's, has a real unusual chord progression on the turnaround of the chorus.....unusual and a little unsettling!
Also great is Jerry Byrne's "Light's Out" (written by Mac Rebbenak aka Dr. John) which is really fast and rocking Justine is also pretty rocking and intense and Larry Williams' "She Said Yeah" also appears.
Other than that, there's not much on here that I come back to and some songs I just don't like. But the songs I just listed above, I would crawl through something unpleasant to get, unquestionably, they are real gems.
On top of everything else, this has one of my favorite covers of all time, so with the cover and the 8 must-have songs, I'd say that's pretty good. I give it 4 stars for that, though you might want to subtract a star if you think that only 8 worthy tracks on a 25-song album isn't worth it. Hope this helps. ("Sack" is all right, also, a novelty song, isn't "Sack" another word for alcohol?)"
