CD Reviews

Pixies F*****N' Rock

"I'll admit that I'm the sort of Pixies fan who has to own *everything* related, including posters, articles, albums by other Subba bands (Frank, Breeders), etc. I always cringe when I'm about to listen to a Pixies cover, but I wasn't sorry that I ordered this. "Where Is My Mind?", the other tribute album, had a few awful tracks, a few cool ones and a lot of passable ones and this album is the same way, only with a lot more girl groups! I love the sound of Pixies songs being sung by girls so that makes up for a lot. Glass Candle Grenade's do of "The Holiday Song" is fairly close to the original, but with a grrl-ish flair. An April March did "Alec Eiffel" a little bit more softly than the original, but well. Engine's cover of "Subbacultcha" is as cool and sardonic as the Pixies version. "Distance Equals Rate Times Time" (I forget the band) is dreamy, with sweet harmonies. My major disappointments were "Tame" (could've been good if the female singer hadn't tried to imitate Black's screaming) and the many, many bands that decided to do slow, dark, dull goth covers of energetic songs. CD players, though, let you skip over the bad stuff easily-- wonderful invention."
Worst tribute album ever?

"Yeah, it really is. It should be burned. Every classic Pixies song completely destroyed. Trust me it's terrible. Don't buy it, please. For the love of God leave this page right now."

"What are these other people talking about? They must be groupies of Weezer! I bought this CD even after reading their posts and the CD rocks. Unfortunately I also bought the "where is my mind" tribute. I was so disappointed that I returned it immediately. So far, this is the only Pixies tribute out there that mimics the originality of the Pixies themselves. The last thing I want to hear is a tribute that is an exact replica of the band. If you like indie/noise-pop/shoegaze/trance, you will LOVE this CD!Rob Nywalski
