CD Reviews

Perfecto chills
Erica Anderson | Minneapolis, MN | 10/14/2003

"To say I am a fan of chillout music would be a gross understatement of the century. Whether I am kicking back in my apartment or listening to music at the office while I work, I always am in the mood for some soothing music. I am particular picky about buying chillout compilations that floods the cd racks nowadays. A lot of compilations just copy one another. This past weekend, I came across "Perfecto Chills Vol.1" in the club section of my favorite record store. I didn't buy it then. I decided to buy it today when I was unexpectedly given the rest of the afternoon off. Although I have a couple of songs already, the majority of the songs I have never heard of like Frossst's "Amygdala"and Echo's "I've Got You Under My Skin". Obviously what is a Perfecto compilation without a Paul Oakenfold song? Since chillout music is the rage now, it was obvious that Oakey would jump on the bandwagon. Unlike the crappy and predictable Ultra Chilled series, "Perfecto Chills Vol.1" is a solid compilation filled with some of the most hauntingly beautiful music perfect to enjoy a martini or two on a cold winter/fall night. On disc 1, I thought the strongest tracks was the Lemon Jelly song "Space Walk", Bent's "The Everlasting Blink", and my personal favorite Motorcycle's "As the Rush Comes In". "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" is probably my least favorite Coldplay song on their latest album "A Rush of Blood to the Head" but I thought the remix was quite interesting. The gentle, trip hop beats mellowed out the song. After hearing the royksopp's remix version of The Streets' "Weak Become Heroes" on another chillout compilation, I think I prefer that over the original version that is on this compilation. That is just my personal preference. As for disc 2, I just flipped over Frost's "Amygdala" and Echo's "I've Got You Under My Skin". I guess it was the angelic female vocals over the smooth trip hop beats that got me hooked. My only beef with the compilation is the predictability of the songs, I already have heard the songs by Motorcycle and The Streets (well the Royksopp remix that is). Plus the vibe of the cd doesn't match the meditative vibe I get from the Buddha Bar series. Still if the first volume is a sign to what to come from Oakey, then I look forward to hearing more in this chillout series."

"Much like the reviewer below, I buy a lot of chillout/downtempo music. But these days it seems like it's getting tougher and tougher to sort through the garbage- a lot of the compilations have 2-3 really good tracks and the rest is just whatever. This comp is definitely the exception, and it truly lives up to the Oakenfold/Perfecto label. My favorite tracks are the trip hop remix of Coldplay's "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face" (a remix that has been previously nearly impossible to purchase), Infusion's "Meant to Be," and the Rae & Christian Remix of Aim "Sail." Like all good Perfecto releases, both discs close out with stunning tracks, and the sequencing is really well done. [If you live in the SoCal area, you'll also notice that they included KCRW favorite Jem on Disc 2.] Buy this album and don't get burned by one of the other so-so chillout compilations."
Great Sounds

"I fell in love with Motorcycle's "As the Rush Comes" and came across this CD while surfing for this song...this song nornally plays on party 93.1 (Florida) and is a faster beat(Gabriel and Dresden trance remix) than the one here. The one here is just as fantastic and sounds perfectly sexy. I listened to the rest of the CD and it is great. Worth the $20 bucks spent. Almost all songs are just plain great!"
