Synopsis

Album Description
As Described by Robb @ Soulcafe.net Aside from the quality & consistency of the Neo-Soul United franchise, the only thing bigger and better than its ability to put together some of the most talented artists and best songs the Neo-Soul genre has to offer, is its commitment to breaking new sound & ground as well as new artists. For this, we should not only go out and get V.3 (1 & 2 if you haven?t already), but we should thank Glory Records for carrying on the "struggle", and making the musical ride sweeter for both the fans and the artists. Neo-Soul United V.3, is a "tributive" revisitation, re-innovation and rebirth of what Soul and Rhythm & Blues (now mistaken as present R&B) music was in the 60?s & 70?s. This album is in a word, a throwback. A throwback to when classic, ageless crooners like Smokie, Curtis, Stevie, Donnie, and Marvin controlled your listening pleasure. This explosive period of creative expression, social consciousness, and passionately unparalleled artistry could be looked upon as the cornerstone of what makes us irrevocably American and human; at our best. For those who have forgotten, those who never knew, and those who are simply searching; music used to be a source of expression, reflection, joy, pride, and hope. If we ever needed meaning, direction, relevance, and a positive picture of love & inspiration in our music, we need it now, and it seems that Neo-Soul United V.3 came and delivered just that. V.3 revisits & reconnects us with the roots and reasons that make Soul and Neo-Soul music so . . . well, soulful. Like each of the previous volumes, V.3 takes art, expression, emotion, and talent; mixes them with some of today?s flavor, and yesterday?s grooves, and pours it all into the music. Consider Neo-Soul United V.3 the soundtrack of yesterday being channeled from yesterday?s artists to the artists of today. Neo-Soul United V.3 is in a class by itself among compilations as well as Soul/R&B albums released this year. If you?re looking for that old school vibe, but still yearn for new music, this is definitely the album for you.

"Various Artists - Neo Soul United 3 (Glory, 2004)

This is the first album I brought from the Neo Soul United series and I must say that it's pretty okay. Nothing to get hyped up about really but you can sure groove to it. I'm not feeling that J. Michael guy at all and his two songs ("Judgment", "Never Forget") are two songs too many. However, Valencia Robinson's two songs, "Blacksolsista" and "Bye Bye Angel", made me wish that she had more songs on here! She reminds me of a neo soul artist of the past by the name of Grenique. I hope Valencia blows up because Grenique sure didn't.

Anyway, back to the album: most of these artists are unknowns and some of them aren't worth knowing like Jarrard Anthony with his mediocre "Candy". On the other hand, Klientel hits home with his ballad, "Home", and Jennifer Johns (another girl to watch out for) is destined to create some baby-making music with "O". And you probably heard of Martin Luther, who hits us with "Ms America". But I would still borrow this album first, or may I recommend a better neo soul compilation, "The Soul Lounge, Vol. 1". -EJR"
