CD Reviews

Big improvement over US counterpart
Pat Kelly | Here, There & Everywhere | 08/01/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Like the US NOW series, the UK NOW contains a variety of full length original hits, and the hits are regularly more current than the US version. Unlike the States, you get 2 CD's. Here's the tracklist:1. Robbie Williams - Eternity (will this be the ballad that finally breaks him in the States?) 2. Gabrielle - Out Of Reach 3. Atomic Kitten - Eternal Flame (great remake of Bangles classic) 4. Blue - All Rise 5. S Club 7- Don't Stop Movin' 6. Geri Halliwell - It's Raining Men (could be Ginger Spice's first US solo hit) 7. Ronan Keating - Lovin' Each Day (picking up steam on radio) 8. Stereophonics - Have A Nice Day 9. Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag 10. Blink 182 - The Rock Show (early printings may carry the EXPLICIT LYRIC version) 11. U2 - Elevation (Tomb Raider Mix)12. Outkast - Ms Jackson13. Destiny's Child - Survivor14. Hear'say - The Way To Your Love 15. Backstreet Boys - More Than That 16. Britney Spears - Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know 17. Marti Pellow - Close To You 18. Dido - Thank You 19. Zero 7 - Destiny 20. Radiohead - Pyramid SongCD2 (Great dancetracks):1. Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue (fabulous Remix of the 1983 hit) 2. Gorillaz - 19-2000 (Soulchild Remix) 3. Dj Pied Piper & Masters Of Ceremonies - Do You Really Like It? 4. Mis-Teeq - All I Want 5. Roger Sanchez - Another Chance (Toto's "I Won't Hold You Back" turned sideways) 6. Basement Jaxx - Romeo 7. Da Hool - Meet Her At The Love Parade 2001 8. Ian Van Dahl - Castles In The Sky 9. Fragma - You Are Alive 10. Steps - Here And Now 11. A*Teens - Upside Down 12. Bellefire - Perfect Bliss 13. Texas - I Don't Want A Lover (2001 Mix) 14. Boris Dlugosch Feat Roisin - Never Enough15. Janet Jackson - All For You16. Eve - Who's That Girl? 17. Nelly Feat City Spud - Ride Wit Me 18. Sisqo - Dance For Me 19. Aaron Soul - Ring Ring Ring 20. Damage - So What If I 21. Melanie B - Lullaby ...."

"This album is a brilliant mix of pop, dance, and rap. It has a song for everyone. I t contains many of the chart topping singles such as atomic kitten's eternal flame and also robbie williams' eternity. It is another great addition to the Now colletion."

"Now 49 had arrived and as usual is better than it's US counterpart Now 7 but is weaker than might have been expected although on the face of it the tracklisting is fairly decent and does include a remarkable 8 UK Number 1's as well as 2 US Number 1's - more than Now 7 contains. Anyway all the songs that were big hits are included although there is one notbale exception in Shaggy's Angel as it is on Universal records who make the Now series and other exceptions are either on Sony, Warner or BMG records and their affiliates and they are not producers of the Now series in the UK. Here's the tracklisting and since there is no picture on amazon.com the cover is yellow/orange and tends to look a little like Now 6 in the US.Disc One: 01.Eternity - Robbie Williams (No.1) - nice relaxing ballad 02.Out Of Reach - Gabrielle (No.4) - another ballad and featured in Bridget Jones's Diary 03.Eternal Flame - Atomic Kitten (No.1) - terrible cover of the Bangles classic 04.All Rise - Blue (No.4) - incredibly cathcy pop/rnb song 05.Don't Stop Movin' - S Club 7 (No.1) - dancey pop tune 06.It's Raining Men - Geri Halliwell (No.1) - decent cover 07.Lovin' Each Day - Ronan Keating (No.2) - good rock/pop 08.Have A Nice Day - Stereophonics (No.5) - good one of the UK's top rock groups 09.Teenage Dirtbag - Wheatus (No.2) cathcy if irritating 10.The Rock Show - Blink 182 (No.14) normal blink stuff 11.Elevation (Tomb Raider Mix) - U2 (No.3) U2 at their best 12.Ms Jackson - Outkast (No.2) - US No.1 13.Survivor - Destiny's Child (No.1) - you'll know this 14.The Way To Your Love - Hear' Say (No.1) - UK's Popstars 15.More Than That - Backstreet Boys (No.12) - self explanatory 16.Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know - Britney Spears (No.12) 17.Close To You - Marti Pellow (No.9) Ex Wet Wet Wet frontman with first solo single - decent ballad 18.Thank You - Dido (No.3) - Thank You 19.Destiny - Zero 7 (N/R) - Mercury Music Prize nominees 20.Pyramid Song - Radiohead (No.5) - usual high standardDisc Two 01.Electric Avenue (Ringback Remix) - Eddy Grant (No.6) - updated for 2001 - as good as ever 02.19-2000 - Gorillaz (No.5) - another great tune from the computer animated band 03.Do You Really Like It? - DJ Pied Piper (No.1) - amazingly catchy garage anthem 04.All I Want - Mis-Teeq (No.2) - garage pop 05.Another Chance - Roger Sanchez (No.1) - dance anthem 06.Romeo - Basement Jaxx (No.6) - has an indian feel to it 07.Da Hool - Meet Her At The Love Parade 2001 (No.12) - Remix of 98 dance classic 08.Castles In The Sky- Ian Van Dahl (No.5) - Excellent dance tune 09.You Are Alive - Fragma (No.4) - Eurodance 10.Here And Now - Steps (No.4) - good fun pop 11.Upside Down - A*Teens (No.10) - see above 12.Perfect Bliss - Bellefire (No.18) - new irish girl group 13.I Don't Want A Lover (2001 Mix) - Texas (No.16) - update of 1989 top ten hit 14.Never Enough - Boris Dlugosch ft Roisin (No.14) - the voice behind Moloko 15.All For You - Janet Jackson (No.3) - you know this 16.Who's That Girl - Eve (No.6) - catchy rnb 17.Ride Wit Me - Nelly ft City Spud (No.3) - good if censored 18.Dance For Me - Sisqo (No.6) - similar to thong song and just as good 19.Ring Ring Ring - Aaron Soul (No.13) - rnb 20.So What If I - Damage (No.12) - same as above 21.Lullaby - Melanie B (No.11) - nice ballad from Scary Spice who has now been dropped by record label.Full of hits - really good value and better than Now 7"
