Sappy Loves Songs, but Good

"RCA Victor's compilation album of "Love Song's Greatest Hits" is an mixture of some of the sappier songs RCA Victor has the rights to. While all of them are pleasant to listen to, for this swing/40s jazz enthusiast, the arrangements are so similar that very few stand out. The arrangements stay to the soupy/sentimental side; if you don't like Glenn Miller's style, steer clear.I quite enjoy "I Got it Bad and that Ain't Good"-- one of my favorite Ellington songs and a rarity on compilation albums. I also like the inclusion of Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust"-- a different musician on this standard. The Lena Horne tracks are very quiet, so beware, as one starts out the set. When Tommy Dorsey's band kicks in, it might be startling. If you're looking at this for the Frank Sinatra/Tommy Dorsey selections, be aware that RCA Victor has a Frank Sinatra/Tommy Dorsey album that is *fantastic* and Amazon has it."
