CD Reviews

Lots of CD debuts
Zub | Forks Twp., PA | 03/23/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This collection of all top-100 American charting tunes from the 60s and early 70s presents a few familiar tunes along with a wealth of songs that have seldom, if at all, seen the digital light of day. Of the generous 26 tracks, nine were top-10, five more were top-20 and the remainder all made it into the top-100 at some point so there're no flips, album cuts or other "filler" tracks here. Among the rarities here are "Under The Moon Of Love", Curtis Lee's follow up to his debut "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" hit (also included here), the Dave Clark Five's pre-British invasion charter "I Knew It All The Time", a tune not available on any domestic CD (it was not included in the Hollywood Records' Dave Clark Five collection) and the British group Montanas with their "You've Gotta Be Loved". Virtually all of these tracks were issued on independent labels at the time of their release and in some cases not the most state-of-the-art recording facilities were used. Add to that the ravages of time and it's not surprising that the sound quality on some of these tracks is less than pristine. Nevertheless, mostly they are reasonably clean and a few tracks do appear in stereo, namely tracks 7,8,12,17,24-26. Each of the included tracks gets a paragraph worth of backround in the liner notes booklet adding to the value and interest of this package. Highly recommended as an interesting completer piece to any collection of hits from the classic age of American rock and roll. A follow-up volume to this piece with a similar repertoire is also available and is likewise worthwhile."
