CD Reviews

A great selection of French songs -
B. A. Friend | La Nouvelle-Zelande | 11/22/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

""J'aime la chanson francais" (I like French Song) Disky HR 888 152 is a box-set of 4 CDs containing a wonderful selection of French popular songs. You will find evergreen artists like ADAMO and CARLOS, famous chanson singers such as CHARLES DUMONT and SERGE LAMA, French celebrities; singer song-writer ALICE DONA and Princess STEPHANIE. Despite the Dutch label the music is mainly hits from the sixties, seventies and eighties and contains a broad mix of "Varietes francais" (French name for Francophone style music - French variety.)
Stlyes include easy listening, commercial mainstream pop, crooners, novelty, humour, Creole, oldies and europop. Songs include the Canadian hit "La complainte du phoque en Alaska" by BEAU DOMMAGE - a really haunting and inspiring song as is "Le matin sur la riviere" by EVE BRENNER who turns her voice into a musical instrument. There are well know songs too, such as "Dominique" by the SINGING NUN (soeur Sourire) and "Adieu ma jolie Candy" by JEAN FRANCOIS MICHAEL. Fun and 'fete' (party) songs include "Ali Baba" by BEZU and "La Chenille" by LA BANDE A BASILE. Hits include "Le Sud" by NINO FERRER and "C'est ma fete" (which we know as "It's my party") by RICHARD ANTHONY - you'll dicover more yourself..
My only regret is that such top selling artists as Hallyday, Vartan and Sardou have not been included. However, if you are looking to extend a 'world music' collection this would be a great collection to represent France."
