Synopsis

Album Description
American rock musicians showed that purely instrumental performances could be honored into hit singles, without any help from lead singers, way back in the Fifties. It was all part of the rock 'n' roll explosion and despite the adulation for stars like Fabian and Elvis, there was room for players like fine young drummer Sandy Nelson in the charts too. His pounding performance of 'And Then There Were Drums' kicks off this consistently entertaining set that focus on bands like Johnny & The Hurricanes, The Ventures and B. Bumble & The Jaywalkers doing their thing. Peter's band was one of the first to feature a double drum kit with flashing lights.

CD Reviews

"Nuggets" is the word!

(4 out of 5 stars)

"You want to talk nostalgia? - in this album you have more interesting "long lost" tracks than you might actually realise. Most of the tracks were recorded in the rock 'n' roll era and therefore have somehow captured that sharp sound of raw innocence and high enthusiasm from that unrepeatable period. Not only have you got this you also have quite a number of classic tracks which are heretofore unavailable in any form. The Original Les Reed Version of "Man of Action", the longtime signature tune of the ill fated pirate radio station, RNI (Radio North Sea International) and other than "girl on a motorcycle, I have come across no other Les Reed music in 20 years. Then Sounds Orchestral, another excellent DJ signature tune from the sixties. Other tracks by the Ventures, Duane Eddy on his version of the Petter Gunn theme, Laurie Johnsons' Original Avengers' theme, Cozy Powell's "Man in Black" to name a few are not easy to come by tracks, giving this album added value. This is a first rate compilation album of original and alternatively quirky and unusual cover version intstrumentals from the sixties when instrumental music was not a cliche, but a serious art form. John Williams is cool - but I love this! For me this album is a rediscovery, for you it will certainly be something different - if not addictive."
