Heirs to Jobim--A Tribute That Would Make Jobim Proud

"Antonio Carlo Jobim, founder of the Bossa Nova, would be unquestionably proud to hear this wounderfully-diverse tribute to his music. "Heirs to Jobim" includes performances of his more popular songs (Desafinado, Garota de Ipanema/Girl From Ipanema), as well as those less well-known. The New York Voices open the CD with an up-tempo arrangement of "Desafinado"; though "Desafinado" was not originally intended to be performed at a moderate-fast tempo, the NYV more than make up for it with their always tantalizing style and sound. "Desafinado" is follwed by a very rhythmic and soulful Philip Hamilton rendition of "Waters of March." Other highlights of the CD include a strikingly original recording of "Ligia" by Arto Lindsay, Randy Breker Session's "Corcovado," Flora Purim singing "Agua de Beber," and the New York Voices' emotionally, and aurally rich a capella performance of "Modinha." The CD concludes with Lisa Ono singing "Estrada Blanca," accompanied on piano by Jobim, himself. "Heirs to Jobim" is a blend of traditional performances with original and innovative interpretations of songs that have left a strong imprint on the jazz world today."
