"heading in the right direction seems to focus more on highlighting the richness of australian jazz music in the early 1970s than it does on a finding a steady groove. to be true, there's a subtle groove on many of the tracks, but the styles abruptly vary from straight-ahead blues, samba, lounge, soul and jazz. it's one of those cases where the groove gets thrown off (do you know what i mean?). "sunbath" sounds like it would have fit better on brazilian thoroughfare and "i saw a flying saucer" wouldn't be out of place on one of the incredibly strange music cds. renee geyer's tracks sound like chicago-style blues, not bad, but probably not what you would expect from a luv n' haight compilation either. there's little cohesion here, but much of the music is interesting. the music is generally good as well, but compared to most other luv 'n haight compilations, this one lacks a power-packed punch."
