CD Reviews

A Gloden Great
berniekoro | Wilton Manors, FL United States | 10/30/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Three full disk of 76 songs. It's got a lot of great songs from classic movies. Bebe Daniel and Rudy Keeler's song are from 42nd street and are glorious. In additon Bob Hope, Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, Old Blue Eyes, and Eddy Cantors sing up some of their golden greats. A must buy for collectors. Just wished they were remastered a bit better."
Pure nostalgia

"How can a 3-disc set of songs from the 1930's films evoke such a wonderful feeling of nostalgia in one born decades later?

I don't watch American Movie Classics, and I rarely borrow DVD's of these films. Why did these songs ring a bell? It struck me that my baptism into their marvelous melodies was performed by none other that Bugs Bunny and his Looney Tune friends. Karl Stalling, who directed the music to highlight their crazy antics, borrowed heavily from popular film music of his time. While I bought the set to hear "Jeepers Creepers" and a few other tunes I knew, I discovered "This Year's Crop of Kisses" and other songs I didn't remember hearing actually sounded familiar. Stalling used the melodies (sans lyrics) as background music to the cartoons I grew up with and now own on DVD (check out "Looney Tunes Golden Collection" vols. 1 to 3).

So even if you are not a vintage film buff, you may find this collection of old movie hits nostalgic. At under $15 for three discs, how can you go wrong? The sound quality is only marginally better than listening to old LP's and 78's, but the set is more than worth the price."
NOSTALGIA - HOLLYWOOD - POP
Nikica Gilic | Zagreb, Croatia | 02/02/2009

"Without any liner notes (quite normal for Disky company's Golden Greats series), this is a nice collection of 20s, 30s (and 40s) pop classics mostly made popular in the movies.

Sometimes they come with a swing and/or jazz tinge (Benny Goodman, Frank Trumbauer, Louis Armstrong, The Andrews Sisters...), sometimes it's plain and simple oldtimes pop music (Judy Garland singing "Over the Rainbow", Al Jolson doing "My mammie", Adriana Caselotti's "Someday my prince will come" - from "Cinderella"...), sometimes just darn strange - Carmen Miranda with Lua e Garoto Band doing "I yi-yi-yi-yi-yi (I Like You Very Much)" or James Cagney doing "Yankee Doodle Boy" AKA "Yankee Doodle Dandy"....

Among others, you also have Bing Crosby, Glenn Miller, Jimmy Dorsey, Fred Astaire, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald, Gene Kelly... Still, this is not a definite collection of Hollywood pop music but, if purchased at a low price, it's a very nice mood music, ideal background for a nostalgiacs work area or relaxing after a workday..."
