CD Reviews

Inspired collection of Authentic world music
SF Reader | San Francisco | 02/14/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Other collections that I've purchased over the years are just reproductions of traditional music. What sets this collection apart from the rest is that each piece was sampled from the source. Whether it's in Korea, Ghana or the Australian outback, the authentic recordings are crisp and inspiring.A great companion box set to take a look at is 'Global Celebrations' by ellipsis arts."
Has been in my constant rotation for 18 yrs!

"What boggles my mind is that there are only two reviews for this CD set. (as of the date of this review). I guess the other two reviewers (also 5 stars) and I were among the lucky few who discovered this powerful compilation some year back. (I bought mine while living in San Diego just out of college in 1992.)

All four of the cds are stand outs in their own right. My favorite over the years has been Voices of the Spirit (Songs & Chants), which is a collection of spiritual, ritual, and meditative music that includes original recordings from all over the world, including monastic, aboriginal, indian, balinese, and various other vocal, spiritual and ritualistic music. I can't even count how many times I've been stressed out and hit "play" on this CD and been transported to another time & place for 48 minutes. Each song is like a window into another culture, another time, another place.

The other CDs are "Harmony & Interplay (Ensembles), The Pulse of Life (Rhythm & Percussion), and Music from the Heart (Melody)--all of which have standout recording throughout.

Because of this CD I've tried various other "World Music" compilations over the years--always with varying degrees of disappointment. This collection (for me) is the high water mark. I've yet to find any compilation or global or meditative music to match it. You'll love these CDs."
