Better Samplers Elsewhere!
deepbluereview | SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA USA | 06/22/2000
(2 out of 5 stars)

"A sampler showcases a labels stable of talent. They are purposely priced dirt cheap as a promotional gimmick in order to get their music in your car and/or home. Samplers give you an opportunity to familiarize yourself with new music and possibly even musicians that you may have never heard of. Obviously, the overall objective is to entice you to buy CD's by the labels performers. All that being said, Evidence's sampler does not accomplish this objective and is mediocre at best. There are four songs that are clearly heads and shoulders above the rest. They are Carl Weathersby's "Feel So Sad", Melvin Taylor's "Dirty Pool", King Ernest's "I Resign" and J.W. Williams' "Reconsider Baby". Others, such as Paul deLay's "Bottom Line", Magic Slims "Talk to your Daughter" and Howlin' Wolf's "Dust my Broom, are not good examples of the true talent that these individuals possess. It would also appear that the Wolf was included to draw people familiar with him or his name to purchase the sampler. I have deducted 3 stars for poor song selection. In my opinion your six bucks is probably better spent on the Alligator, Blind Pig, Tomato, Ice House, Wild Dog, Rooster, Earwig, HMG, JSP, Telarc, Vanguard or any other sampler available."
