CD Reviews

Much more fun than the average goth comp...

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Most gothic & darkwave compilations center around a song or two that are performed by a better-known artist, or even a previously released single. The rest of the average comp is taken up by bands playing paint-by-numbers, cookie cutter goth/industrial. "Dim View of the Future" is better than the average comp. The power of this disc is the variety of the acts, most of them newer bands. Each of these bands work the dark genre with their own individual styles. The highlights of this disc are Apocalypse Theatre- "cain or an open vein" (great vocals!) Nocturne- "the underworld" (somber goth electro) Near Death Experience- "anatasia" (CA style goth, very pretty) Morgana Athena- "e.s.p." (excellent darkwave) Another track that really caught me was "Hymn" by The Filmstrip. It's similar to Dead Can Dance, almost more acoustic (which is admirable considering The Filmstrip is known as 'electronic'). But the best track on this disc by far (& the reason I bought it) is the track by Shadow Project "Forever Came Today". A dark soulful guitar number featuring the exquisite vocals of Rozz Williams. It is an awesome song, but may not get heard at clubs like some Shadow Project tunes, being such a mellow number. Hollows Hill really took the cake, the order of the songs is perfect, each one leading to the next, in fact Dim View has a flow to it not offered up by most comps. This CD is a must for any complete Gothic/Darkwave collection."
