Synopsis

Animal Jamboree, like every other disc spun off of Dora and Diego's insanely popular Nickelodeon TV shows, isn't the kind of record moms and dads buy to enjoy with their preschoolers. It's more the take-it-into-your-room-and-keep-the-volume-low variety (this despite the presence of several songs that almost no adult can listen to without singing loudly and goofily along: can you resist "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and "Joy to the World"?). Leaving aside the obvious affronts to grown-up sensibilities--the flat, loud voices; the interactive elements that refuse to let a sleepy parent slip into a semi-coma while listening; the cheap cheeping in the gratuitously grating "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" song--there's a lot to like here. The skillful blending of Spanish words into every song is by now a Dora and Diego standard, but Animal Jamboree takes it one step further, directing the language lab into the biology classroom. "Crocodile Rock" never seemed so educational and Doctor Doolittle's "Talk to the Animals" loses a lot of its hot air. The kicker, of course, is that kids love it: Present it wrapped in puppy-dog paper to any TV-watching 3-year-old, and see if she doesn't lap it up. --Tammy La Gorce

CD Reviews

One of the Best CDs for kids
SSK | 10/24/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This disc doesn't get the attention it deserves. There are so many great things about it. First, I disagree with the original reviewer that the music is one of those toddler discs that make adults go insane. This is actually one of the most adult-friendly kid discs I've heard. If anything, the Dora Soundtrack is a kids only disc. Animal Jamboree has no weird songs that go like, "I love my ball, my bouncy ball. I love my ball, ball, ball, ball, ball!" It's actually music that starts crossing the barriers between kids and adults music. It's very pop/rock (lots of electric guitars in here) with fun, energetic music, some humourous songs, and not too much talking. Plus there's less of Dora's voice and more of the others so it sounds better, since Dora's voice is too shrill.

Also, Joy To The World is NOT the Christmas song, it's a totally different song wishing happiness for all the animals and people in the world.

It retains a lot of the shows' themes, especially, of course, Diego's respect for wildlife. It's nicely arranged with a Hispanic flavour, as well.

The one regret is that is only has 10 songs on it, though I should mention that they are full length songs, not the short ones like on the Dora Soundtrack. So if you get this cd, tell your kid to play it on the family cd player and turn the volume up so you can listen along."

"We've had this CD for almost a year and it is still my boys' (ages 2 and 4) favorite. Whenever we turn it on, they can't stop dancing to it. My husband and I even enjoy it."
Catchy songs, happy and upbeat

"My daughter is a huge Dora fan (she also likes Diego). This CD hit the mark for her and I enjoy it as well. The songs have a good beat and are very cheery and fun. There is just enough of Dora and Diego talking/singing throughout so that she can tell it is a "Dora" product, which is key with a little one who only wants to hear her favorites."
